Similar Conditions That Can Look Like Acute Clonorchiasis

Several common feline hepatobiliary diseases can mimic acute clonorchiasis, and accurate diagnosis depends on the right tests.

Feline cholangiohepatitis (inflammation of the bile ducts and liver) presents with similar signs, including jaundice, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Reliable point-of-care or cage-side tests for early acute infection, before eggs appear in faeces, are lacking, making early detection difficult [4].

The molecular crosstalk between C. sinensis and the feline biliary epithelium, including the signalling pathways that lead to fibrosis and cancer, remains poorly understood, which hinders the development of targeted therapies [4].
